Topics Specific contents
3D CAD modelling systems  3D Representation methods with CAD systems: taxonomy and specific characteristics of the different systems. State of the art and evolution trends in reference to development methods for industrial products.
2
Machine morphology  Machines, mechanisms and mechanical components: definitions and generalities. Machine layout using correctly elementary mechanical functions: general criteria and industrial and mechanical examples.
4
Element and simple mechanical assemblies dimensioning  Single components and simple mechanical assemblies dimensioning and layout: theoretical and functional aspects, technological and manufacturing requirements, management and organizational problems. Critical exam of typical mechanical application cases.
8
Curves and surfaces  Parametric representation of curves and surfaces. Properties and characteristics of the main representation algorithms (Bézier methods, B-spline, NURBS). Examples of industrial application cases.
3
Solid models  Representation schemes of 3D models: wireframe modelling; parametric feature based modelling; volume decomposition modelling; curves sweeping; constructive solid geometry (CGS); B-Rep modelling. Validation criteria for solid models. Euler operators. Boolean operations.
4
Parametric Systems  Parametric modelling of family parts. Programming, variational and parametric approaches. Application examples inside Group technology.
2
The colour  Colour representation: for human perception; for technical specification, and for measurement. Selection and ergonomic usage criteria of colour in CAD.
2
Rendering  Photometric dimensions. Lighting models: empiric models (Gouraud; Phong). Ray-tracing algorithm and brief description of other models (radiosity etc…).
1
Data transfer and coding standards  2D, 3D and Hybrid standards ( DXF, IGES, STEP…). The STL format: first tasks and following applications development.
2
Practical 3D CAD exercises laboratory  Use of a parametric feature based CAD 3D modeller for the generation of parts, assemblies and drafting, according to UNI ISO standards, of components and simple mechanical systems. (Themes and execution rules of all the exercises will be described during the course).
