This is an undergraduate level course in Embedded System Design. Some new applications in the field of consumer electronics, automotive, computing platforms and ubiquitous computing are presented to introduce the key problems in electronic design. The introduction shows the inadequacy of the standard top-down design methodology to design modern embedded systems that are not limited to standard platforms like micro-controllers and custom hardware. The Platform-Based Design is introduced as a promising solution and the key aspects of this design methodology are highlighted. The following sections of the class focus on the functional specification, architectural specification and mapping of the former to the latter. Finally, complete design methodologies for control and multimedia applications are presented together with some case studies.
